JBS revenues still on the rise

Packer and tanning group JBS has reported revenues of $43.5 billion (at current exchange rates and for illustrative purposes). In its local currency, the real, JBS said its revenue growth compared to 2014 was 35.2%.

JBS Mercosul, the division that includes leather-making business unit JBS Couros, reported a small decline (0.8%) in revenues of around $2 billion. But it registered a considerable increase in earnings, up by 72.5% to around $245 million (again, at current exchange rates).

In the course of 2015, JBS Mercosul processed almost 8.3 million head of cattle, a decline of 11.7%, or of 1.1 million head of cattle, compared to 2014. It said the lower volume was because of a reduced offering of cattle for slaughter from livestock farmers and higher prices per head. But it said an increase in the average price it was able to obtain for meat, especially in newly opened markets such as China, compensated for this this decline.

Chief executive, Wesley Batista, said on announcing the results that JBS was confident of growth in the future thanks to projected increases in the global population and in wealth around the world. “Consumer habits are changing,” he said, “and this, combined with a rise in available income in a number of countries, has led people to seek a healthier diet, increasing their intake of foods with higher levels of protein-based nutrition.”

He paid tribute to the group’s more than 230,000 employees, referring to them as “ambassadors for our culture and our values, who contribute every day to the growth and development of JBS”.
