New Hampshire-based leather chemicals manufacturer Chemtan has said a newly engineered chrome-free tanning agent, M-5, can offer a “significantly improved” shrink temperature compared to alternative chrome-free options.

It said on bringing the product to market that M-5 can typically achieve a shrink temperature of 75 degrees Celsius.

It’s non-yellowing, making the product especially suited to making leather for white athletic shoes and for automotive, but it also imparts “numerous reactive sites”, Chemtan said, to make bright and dark shades possible.

It is a designed to replace aldehyde and aluminium tans.
