Synthetic “invasion” blamed for sales decline for Ecuador’s tanners

In recent comments, Marco Buestán, whose family runs a well established tanning and footwear group in Quito, told local media that sales began to decline after the second quarter of 2015 when what he called an unprecedented volume of imported footwear began to arrive in Ecuador from China, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and other countries.
He said the most worrying aspect of this development was that most of the shoes arriving on the Ecuadorean market had synthetic uppers, and he said many producers in Ecuador had begun to imitate them “simply to stay in the market”.
Another tanner, Byron Aldaz, said Ecuador had suffered “an invasion” of shoes made from synthetic materials.
