Possible buyer of Sadesa tannery named

A trade union representative has named the possible buyer of a tannery run by Sadesa in Las Toscas, in Argentina’s Santa Fe province.

Sadesa announced in January that it will cease operations at the plant; it is scheduled to close at the end of February.

Three weeks before closure, media in Argentina began reporting that government ministers have held meetings with representatives of the local authorities, the 300 or so people who work in the tannery, trade unions and an unnamed firm that the reports said was preparing to take the business over as a going concern.

Now, speaking on a local radio station, a senior trade union official, Alejandro Delssín, has named rival tanning group Arlei as the potential buyer. However, he said Arlei is hoping for assistance from the government if it is to save the tannery and the workers’ jobs.

Mr Delssín said the prospective new owner would need some time to find markets for the extra leather the acquisition would allow it to make and would benefit from assistance from the authorities in paying workers’ salaries until it finds those markets.

Arlei already runs a tannery in Las Toscas, as well as a vegetable-tanning plant at Rosario de Lerma in the province of Salta, and a finishing, warehousing and furniture-manufacturing operation in Buenos Aires.
