Export figures overshadow positive IILF mood

The 2016 Indian International Leather Fair ended on February 3 with a largely positive mood among visitors and exhibitors. The first two days of the event were busy, with the halls considerably quieter, as usual, on the last day.

However, the mood was overshadowed to some extent by new figures from the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) showing a 10% decline in India’s leather sector exports in the first eight months of this financial year, April-November 2015. Total export values were just over $4 billion.

CLE chairman, Rafeeque Ahmed, told media that a ban on cattle slaughter in some Indian states last year was having an effect. He said the domestic supply of hides and skins was down by as much as 6%, making many tanners turn to overseas raw material, which they can import duty free.

During the fair, one Indian raw material trader, who asked not to be named, told World Leather that demand for crust from locations such as Turkey and Argentina had risen by 70% in India in the last two years.
