Leather chemicals firms offer generous terms to Turkish tanners

Leather industry observers in Turkey have reported that chemicals manufacturers there have offered extended payment terms to tanners, giving them up to 18 months to pay for supplies.

The move is a gesture of support for tanners who are experiencing a sharp downturn in demand for finished leather, reports have said.

Raw material prices are low, with tanners being asked to pay as little as $5 for wet blue sheepskins of up to 7.5 square-feet, but Turkish tanners are struggling to take advantage because of low demand.
