Dordogne cluster idea is improving the quality of local hides

An idea to encourage abattoirs and livestock farmers to work closely with a tannery in rural France has resulted in a big increase in the number of premium-quality hides the tannery, Tanneries Chamont, is able to source locally.

A proposal to use European Union funding to set up a ‘rural excellence cluster’ in the Dordogne region of south-western France got under way in 2014. At that time, Tanneries Chamont, which specialises in veg-tanned leathers for saddles for its main client CWD (also a local company) was sourcing most of its raw material from Ireland and Germany.

Twenty-four local livestock farmers have taken part in the initiative, along with two abattoirs. One early result has been an increase in the number of hides from the region that are free from tick-damage. In 2014, when the initiative began, 58% of hides from the 24 farms were free from tick-marks. In 2015, this total went up to 78%.
