The Leather Research Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati is to host a series of educational opportunities in 2016.

A two-day Leather Orientation course, which it has run successfully in the past, will take place on April 27-28 and again on August 17-18. It will cover a wide range of leather-related issues such as physical structure, species identification, hide supply, wet-end and finishing operations, regulations, testing and customer acceptance issues. Attendees will also be given an in-depth tour of the Leather Research Laboratory. The cost of this course is $925 per person, with a discounted price of $830 for additional participants from the same company.

There will also be a Quality Assurance for Leather workshop, a new course designed for individuals working in the leather industry that need a comprehensive understanding of the best quality control methods for quality leather production. It will be a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on application in the laboratory. Course materials will include a copy of the book: Skin, Hide and Leather Defects by Jean Tancous. The cost of this course is $1050 per person with a discounted price of $945 for additional participants from the same company. It will take place on May 18-19 and September 14-15.

In addition, the Cincinnati laboratory will run a Leather Buyers’ Conference over one-and-a-half days in July. It is intended for individuals responsible for sourcing decisions within their organisation and attendees will learn “the key skills necessary to intelligently source leather and avoid common pitfalls that can cost your company money”, the organisation has said. This conference will have presentations from a series of speakers including leatherbiz columnist David Peters and Stephen Sothmann, president of the US Hide, Skin and Leather Association. It will cost $625 per person to attend.
