Dutch leather experts release CSR self-assessment for tanneries

21/12/2015
A group of leather experts from the Netherlands has published a new corporate social responsibility tool for tanneries. The group, which includes the leader of innovation and sustainability at leather chemicals manufacturer Smit & zoon, Egbert Dikkers, has called the tool the Tannery of the Future.

It describes the tool as “easily accessible self-assessment for tanneries”, which can work as a prelude to full certification from, for example, the Leather Working Group. “Tanners, retailers, brands and traders can use the tool to discover how leather production can improve on sustainability, on the basis of clear questions on 14 different aspects of corporate social responsibility,” the group said on announcing the development.

“Increasing sustainability in the international leather supply chain is an essential development in the survival of the leather industry,” said Mr Dikkers. “Therefore, we are continuously looking for innovative solutions that have a positive and lasting impact on the environment and workers. We will certainly encourage our customers to use it.”

Specialist corporate social responsibility campaign group MVO Nederland is to make the tool available to tanners on its website, http://mvonederland.nl/tannery-of-the-future.
