Apparel brand says there will always be good lambskin leather

Spanish leather garment brand Saga Ibáñez has said it is confident it will continue to be able to source the leather made from high-quality Spanish lambskins that it uses, in spite of a turbulent year in the global skins market.

The Zaragoza-based brand recently appointed a new agent for the UK market and is working with a new distributor in the US as it seeks to boost export sales. It already ships its garments to around 20 countries and says China and Japan are the overseas markets in which it feels most established.

As recently as November, our Market Intelligence report described the situation in the international skins market as “frightening”. Asked about the effect of this situation on Saga Ibáñez, sales manager, Juan Antonio Ibáñez, told leatherbiz: “We’re still confident we can find leather made from Spanish lambskins. While there’s a market within the leather sector for exquisite products of great quality, livestock farmers, tanners and garment manufacturers will also find a way of working together to meet that demand. The end product will keep going up in price, but this is artisan work and only specialists can carry it out.”

Mr Ibáñez said his company is increasingly seeing a return to a search among consumers for high-quality, artisan products, which, if they can be personalised are even more appealing, at least to consumers that can afford it.
