Leather Pipeline: Hello again, Hebei
01/12/2015
Forced tannery closures began in Hebei in the spring of 2014 and it took until the start of this year for operations in one of the main centres, Xinji, to get back on track. Xinji had more than 30 tanneries in 2012, processing a collective total of around 4 million hides a year and employing more than 2,000 people.
In the December 1 issue of Leather Pipeline, we learn that Hebei tanners have become particularly busy, particularly in buying cow hides from the European Union, as the year draws to an end. Tanners in China know they have to buy soon if they want hides from Europe to reach them in time for their Lunar New Year holiday at the start of February.
There is less good news concerning the prices tanners everywhere seem to be able to command for finished leather at the moment, with buyers pushing tanners down on price.
