Tanners in Turkey face closure over effluent dispute

24/11/2015
Reports from Turkey say the authorities in Manisa in the west of the country have temporarily closed down 25 tanneries.

According to the authorities, tanners in a specially built industrial zone stopped operating the common effluent treatment plant there about two months ago. Because of environmental concerns over the condition of the Gediz River, the authorities are reported to have said the tanners will only be allowed to start producing leather again if they put the common effluent treatment plant back into operation.

Suggestions are that Manisa tanners felt they were too small to shoulder the expense of running a common effluent treatment plant in the current climate. If so, the decision to stop using the water treatment plant appears to have cost them dearly.
