US hide exports to China fall by one-fifth

Between January and September this year, Chinese tanners brought into the country almost 8.9 million fresh or wet-salted hides and a further 2 million as wet blue. Compared to the same months in 2014, this year’s figures represent a decline of 18% and 27% respectively.
Taken together, the volume of raw material flowing from the US to the Chinese leather industry in the first three quarters of 2015 was just under 10.9 million hides. In the first three quarters of 2014, the corresponding figure was more than 13.6 million, a fall of 19.8%.
In terms of value, Chinese tanners paid $743.9 million for fresh and wet-salted hides over the nine-month period this year, down by 16% year on year, and 202.7 million for wet blue, down by 23%.
