Tanning industry contributes over 25% of Ethiopia’s exports to Italy

Trade between Ethiopia and Italy had a value of €320 million in 2014. Italy’s ministry of foreign affairs has quoted the figure in a newsletter.

In the same newsletter, the ministry has said that 28% of Ethiopia’s exports to Italy come from the tanning industry. It included comments from Italy’s ambassador in Addis Ababa, Giuseppe Mistretta. He said Italy had been working hard to help Ethiopian manufacturing companies develop, based as closely as possible on the model of small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in Italy. He added that Italy has worked in close partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to deliver this help.

“In particular, there have been important results from this from in the tanning sector,” the ambassador said, “as well as in the agri-food and textile industries.”
