H&M highlights organic leather again

Fashion retail group H&M has highlighted organic leather from its home country, Sweden, as a key example of its commitment to “more sustainable materials”.

In 2014, H&M launched new collections called Conscious and Conscious Exclusive, which include certified organic leather from Swedish tannery Tärnsjö.

Speaking on a BBC radio programme in November 2015, H&M’s sustainability manager, Catarina Midby, chose the organic leather as an example of the efforts her company has put into making its manufacturing more sustainable. She acknowledged that the bulk of H&M’s manufacturing partners are in Asia, but said: “It depends on what we produce. We are using more and more sustainable fabrics, such as organic, recycled or FSC-certified lyocell fabrics, and we produce organic leather in Sweden. It’s all a question of where the materials are available.”
