Scheduled to open in September 2018, the Waterside campus will replace the two existing sites that house the universiy, Park, home to the university’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT) and small-scale but fully working tannery, and Avenue. The project will cost £330 million.
At the ceremony, the university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Nick Petford, said: “This is probably one of the most exciting projects the town has ever seen. In three years’ time, this site will be home to 15,000 students and more than 2,000 staff.”
In March this year, Professor Petford told representatives of the UK leather industry that the University of Northampton remains “totally committed to leather provision”, but he said money is an issue of the new Waterside campus is to accommodate the ICLT and the tannery.
He said the university will run a fundraising programme and he urged tanners and other leather-sector companies in the UK to support it. “Between us,” he said, “we can form a very powerful group of partners and we can create something truly outstanding at Waterside; it’s an opportunity to build up a complete offer that covers the leather supply chain in its entirety.”
