Goats offer Australian meat and leather sectors opportunities for growth

A new plan from the Goat Industry Council of Australia (GICA) outlines strong growth possibilities for farmers, with some of those interested in expanding or starting a goat herd already including demand among tanners for the skins as part of their business plans.

The plan outlines steps available to farmers in Australia between now and 2020. GICA calculates that Australia’s national herd size is around 4 million head, but that only 500,000 of these goats are being raised in formal herds.

It also says that because most countries with large goat populations consume the animals domestically, Australia is the world’s largest goat-meat exporter with approximately 95% of production going to countries in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and the US. In 2014, these exports brought in revenues of around $175 million.
