China’s environment minister Chen Jining has reiterated in recent comments previous government statements that some tanneries in populated areas of the country are going to be forced to move to less built-up western areas.

The minister said the government will further tighten controls on pollution, with new regulations coming into force before the end of 2017.

A government programme will force as many as 1,000 companies, including tanners, to move, with financial help from local and central government funds.
