Temple Grandin explains link between animals and autism

Professor Temple Grandin, the US academic whose pioneering work on improving conditions in slaughterhouses has influenced many parts of the global meat industry, has explained why she thinks her suffering from autism has given her a particular insight into the way cattle behave in abattoirs.

In recent comments, Professor Grandin said the connection is that, like animals, autistic people “think in pictures” and have a nervous system that is highly receptive to unusual sights and sounds. As a result, she has based her recommendations to packer companies on trying to eliminate anything that might frighten cattle on the way to slaughter.
