Another Australian millionaire buys into cattle farming

Tom Strachan, an Australian millionaire who made most of his money in the contract labour business, has bought a 7,300-hectare cattle farm in Queensland, joining the ranks of what local media have described as a string of wealthy people in Australia who are investing in agriculture.

Mr Strachan’s acquisition follows similar moves earlier this year by Paul Simons and Gerry Harvey, who made their money in retail, by Gina Rinehart and Andrew, whose wealth comes from their respective families’ mining interests, and by media magnate Kerry Stokes.

The farm Mr Strachan has bought has been described by its new owner as “champagne country that you can’t get enough of”. It has a herd of Hereford cattle that he has called “exceptional” and is relatively close to Australia’s largest cattle sales yards in Roma, Queensland.
