Turkey takes action on cheap leathergoods imports

Following moves in May to impose high levels of import duty on imported footwear, the Turkish government has now taken similar steps to control imports of leathergoods.

Imports of handbags, purses, wallets, belts, items of luggage and other leather accessories will now be subject to duties of 30% in Turkey. As 95% of the products of this type coming into the country are at the lower end of the market, observers believe the measure may make imported accessories too expensive for importers and consumers.

The president of Turkey’s leather products exporters’ union, Mustafa Senocak, welcomed the development, saying it could help prevent the closure of some domestic leathergoods manufacturers and may even help Turkish manufacturers expand production.
