Skilled worker shortage in Colombia

More than 20% of manufacturing companies in Colombia, including tanners and footwear producers, are finding it difficult to recruit workers with the required skills in the current labour market, a new survey has revealed.

Taking part in a national business opinion survey, leather and footwear industry association Acicam said: “Our sector has one of the highest levels of labour cost in Colombia, perhaps even the most expensive. Most young people no longer want to work as technicians, so we have very few coming through and that means the value of those we do have is going up.”

Commenting on the same survey, a World Bank analyst, Daniel Lederman, told Colombian media that companies need to do more to train their own people. He said: “From our point of view, private-sector companies have to become much more involved in professional training. There is a tendency for these companies not to invest in training their workers out of fear that their competitors will come in a take their best people away. This is a fault in the market: levels of training end up being far below what industry needs.”
