Argentinean minister wants to know why leather prices have not come down

Reports from Argentina say the country’s commerce minister, Augusto Costa, will hold a meeting among different industry bodies representing the leather, leathergoods and footwear industries to try to settle a dispute about the price of leather.

Official figures suggest that the price of hides has fallen by 35% since November 2014 but producers of footwear and other finished products have complained to the government that the price of finished leather has not kept pace with this drop.

A business newspaper in Buenos Aires has said that the price of finished leather has increased over the same period of time.

Tanners have said that, even though the price of hides has come down, their overall production costs have not.
