Leather and footwear workers cheaper in Spain now than in 2012

The labour market in Spain is tough and the leather and footwear sectors are no exception to the general trend, according to new statistics issued by the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE).

Tying in with a report in the Financial Times at the start of August, which said, quoting government figures, that wages are dropping across Spain as the country hauls itself out of years of economic crisis, INE has said workers in the leather and footwear sectors are part of the same picture.

Its figures come from an annual survey it carries out among employers. The most recent survey suggests that leather and footwear workers have seen no increase in wages in recent years and in fact earned less in 2014 than they did in 2012.

Average annual wages for a worker in a leather or footwear company in Spain in 2014 were €15,650,30, which is €80 less than they were in 2012.
