Colombia says it will stand up to Panama at WTO

A complaint lodged by Panama with the World Trade Organization against tariffs imposed by Colombia on imports of footwear from its neighbour to the north will encounter stiff resistance, a Colombian government minister has said.

Speaking at the International Footwear and Leather Show (IFLS) in Bogotá at the end of July, industry and trade minister, Cecilia Álvarez, told participating Colombian footwear manufacturers: “The government sends you this message: we are going to defend this at the World Trade Organization with all we’ve got. We want you to be able to compete fairly.”

Colombian industry representatives have complained for a long time about footwear brands by-passing restrictions on imports of cheap shoes from Asia by “triangulating” them through Panama. The new tariffs are aimed at preventing this from happening.
