Mato Grosso do Sul tanneries look elsewhere for hides

A fall in cattle slaughter numbers and the closure of abattoirs in the western Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul is beginning to have an effect on the tanning industry there.

Employment statistics for the region around the state, capital Campo Grande, show that the tanning industry there currently employs 300 people fewer than it did at this time last year.

One leather industry professional, Roberto Berger, has told local media that production levels at his company, Curtume Campo Grande, have dropped from 3,000 hides per day to 1,000.

Not only that, Mr Berger said his company can no longer secure sufficient supplies of hides locally, even to meet these lower requirements. “We are bringing in 500 hides per day from outside Mato Grosso do Sul,” he said. “This is the first time ever that we have had to bring in hides from other states.”

In the first five months of this year, Mato Grosso do Sul tanners exported a total volume of just under 15,000 tonnes of finished and semi-finished hides, registering a value of $52.8 million. These statistics represent a year-on-year decline of 34.1% in volume and of 34.2% in value.
