Beef consumption falls in Argentina: low hide prices blamed

Following statements from packers blaming falling hide prices for the closure of abattoirs in Argentina, the packer industry there has now blamed the leather industry for a decline in the consumption of beef.

Famously voracious eaters of beef, Argentinean consumers are currently eating beef at an annual rate of 59.9 kilos per head. This represents a decline of 2.9% compared to this time last year.

Beef industry association Ciccra has said specifically that packers are putting up the prices consumers have to pay for beef to make up for a decline in the amount of money they are receiving for hides. It said that a 30-kilo hide in October would have brought in around $50 for packers but that a hide of similar weight today will bring packers only $33.

In putting up beef prices to help them make up this shortfall, packers have now seen consumers eat less beef.
