Price of crocodile skins comes down in Bolivia

02/07/2015
Tribal authorities in the Bolivian department of Beni, who have the right to control prices and trade of crocodile and alligator meat and skins, have raised the price of meat by up to $2.50 per kilo while lowering by as much as 33% the price of skins.

The president of a tribal peoples’ association, Bertha Bejarano, has told media in Bolivia that, in the current permitted hunting season, which started at the end of June, trade in up to 35,000 animals will be allowed, with the price of skins local people are able to command falling from just over $40 per piece to less than $30.

Two tanneries, Bolivian Croco and Moxos, are authorised to buy and process the skins. Three meat companies and a small number of restaurants have permission to buy the meat.
