UNIDO asks for input for paper on cleaner leather production

29/06/2015
The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has decided to combine in a “single, comprehensive paper” the publications it has issued in the last 20 years or so on cleaner leather technologies, updating earlier papers where necessary.

UNIDO said it believes putting all of its material together in this way will be of great help in building up knowledge in the global tanning industry. It will call the new, single resource A Framework for Sustainable Leather Manufacture, mirroring the title an extensive book published by World Leather in recent years.

UNIDO’s paper covers topics such as pollution, water management, hair-saving in liming, ammonia-free deliming, chrome management, low-organic solvents finishing, solid waste and so on. In view of what it refers to as “the great need for balanced information on the issues mentioned”, the Vienna-based organisation has published a working draft of the paper in its unedited form, available at this link. It is actively seeking corrections, comments and suggestions, including drawings and photos, from industry professionals around the world for final version of the paper.
