Representatives of the leather industry in Guanajuato, Mexico, have said enquiries are now reaching tanners there for the first time about the possibility of their supplying aviation leather.

In recent comments to local media, the president of local industry association Cicur, Pedro Camarena, said potential buyers of aviation leather have visited Guanajuato this year to hold discussions with tanners about the technical requirements of the material and the ability of Guanajuato producers to meet all specifications, including those governing flame-retardancy.

The upshot is that at least one tannery in León, Kodiak, is now working with local research body Ciatec to develop a process for making leather that satisfies the needs of aviation customers.
