Turkish leather garment producers turn to new markets

The president of the leather and leather products exporters union of Turkey, Mr Mustafa Senocak, has revealed in recent comments to local media that Turkish producers of leather garments have experienced a downturn in demand from most of their traditionally strong export markets.

Countries in the European Union, China and Russia have become more difficult for Turkish producers in the last three years, he said, but he said increased demand from newer markets, including Canada, the US, the Nordic countries and Japan.

He said Japan was a particularly interesting market for Turkish producers, in spite of a high import tax rate (he put it at 38%). He said Japan and Turkey should hold talks about improving their trading relationship to bring this level down.
