China deal could open up other lucrative markets for Brazilian beef exporters

Economist Roberto Giannetti da Fonseca, a former president of the Brazilian meat exporters’ association Abiec, has said Brazil should work hard to develop export sales of its beef in Japan and South Korea.

Following positive news on shipping Brazilian beef to China, after the authorities there cleared 26 beef packing plants in Brazil to recommence exports to China, Mr Giannetti said Brazil should attempt to make inroads in other lucrative Asian markets too.

“These are markets that are still dominated by Australia,” he said in recent comments to Brazilian media. “We should be able to make inroads into them.”

He also said he had high hopes for markets elsewhere in the Americas, including the US, Canada and Mexico, opening up to exports of Brazilian beef. He said he was confident of an agreement with the US coming to completion in June.
