Garment dilemma for Turkish suppliers to the Russian market

27/05/2015
The president of Turkey’s leather and leathergoods exporters’ union, Mustafa Senocak, has called on the government in Ankara to intervene after his member companies submitted a complaint saying customers in Russia are withholding payment for garments made from double-face or nappa that they have already delivered.

Mr Senocak said the Turkish government should negotiate with the Russian authorities to resolve the situation.

He explained that Turkish suppliers have attempted to stay faithful to customers in Russia, which has long been their most important export market, and that many had agreed to deliver leather garments on long-term payment plans. They now report that customers in Russia say they are unable to pay because of the economic downturn there and because of the devaluation of the ruble, but that they are also unwilling to return unsold goods the have received.
