Seoul handbag brand has its heart and soul in Ubrique

Investors from South Korea have launched a new high-end handbag brand called Mahón, for which the design and manufacture of products is taking place in Ubrique, the southern Spanish town that remains a hotspot for leathergoods expertise.

Mahón’s first collection of bags became available to high-end consumers in South Korea at the start of 2015 and a second collection is now on its way from Ubrique to the Asian country, according to reports in Spain.

The brand has an online sales platform with distribution in South Korea only at the moment. However, it has said it intends to expand to other lucrative Asian markets, such as Singapore, if its reception in the marketplace goes as well as it hopes.

A key contact on the ground for the Korean investors has been José Rodríguez Pineda, whose family founded and ran Seville-based leathergoods brand El Caballo for more than a century until it went into administration in 2011.
