São Paulo professor gives up academic life to raise goats

Professor Heloisa Collins, former head of the English department at the Catholic University of São Paulo, has given up academic life and has headed for the hills to raise goats.

The professor has travelled the world and completed her doctorate in England, but has decided that life in the countryside raising goats will suit her better. Her farm covers three hectares of land in the mountains of the Serra da Mantiqueira, near the town of Joanópolis.

Her goats are from the Toggenburg and Saanen breeds. She has told specialist media in Brazil that one of the first things she learned was not to give names to most of the males. With her business plan focused on milk and cheese (as well as agritourism), most male goats will go to the local abattoir quite quickly.
