Underground operators upset Argentinean packers

An organisation representing packers in Argentina has said its members’ ability to make a living is being compromised by competition from “pseudo companies” around the country that avoid paying taxes and ignore animal health regulations.

At a time when the Argentinean packer industry is facing difficulties in securing margins because of currency issues and what it referred to as a fall in the value of sub-products, including hides, the Federation of Regional Argentinean Packer Industries (Fifra) said in recent comments to local media that the authorities in Argentina are turning a blind eye to the activities of these competitor operators.
