The tannery, based in Espelette in the Basque Country, embarked on a technology renewal programme in 2012 with the aim of increasing its competitiveness in the global market. To help it fund the initiative, it applied for the grant in 2014 and found out in April that it had been successful.
Aquitaine has a programme it calls Factory of the Future, under which it offers advice and financial assistance to manufacturing firms in the region that employ a minimum of 20 people. Founded in 1927 and still family-run, Rémy Carriat employs around 50 people at the moment. The tannery has said it aims to invest around €720,000 in its technology renewal programme.
