Palm oil player aims to raise cattle in Indonesia

Indonesian agribusiness firm Astra Agro Lestari has said it may start farming cattle in an attempt to diversify its business. The company manages around 300,000 hectares in various areas of Indonesia, including Kalimantan, Sumatra and Sulawesi, and has concentrated until now on producing crude palm oil.

However, company president, Widya Wiryawan, said on April 14 at a press conference that Astra Agro would like to make the move into cattle, but will seek “more clarity” from the government before moving forward.

“We have many flat plantation sites that may suit cattle’s needs,” Mr Wiryawan said. Commentators said the Indonesian government’s strategy of becoming self-sufficient in beef in the next two years gave Astra Agro grounds for optimism.
