Scratches in leather are not imperfections, designer tells the FT

The founder of a specialist leather interior design company in London has called on the market to recognise that scratches in leather can add rather than detract from its beauty.

Simon Harcourt of Harcourt Design said in an article in the Financial Times at the start of April that consumers have “an ingrained fascination” with leather.

His company specialises in leather wall tiles, artworks in leather and furniture projects, all constructed in London. It describes these products as objects that will mature elegantly over time as opposed to simply wearing out, offering buyers “a lifetime possession in a world of things which are used and cast aside”.

In the Financial Times piece, Mr Harcourt said it is important for consumers to accept that leather will change in appearance over time. He told the newspaper: “The first scratch you put in a piece makes you nervous, but after a time you realise that it’s not an imperfection, it’s just a material that’s developing life and personality of its own.”
