A tannery in northern Argentina claims to have helped launch Latin America’s first leather watch-strap factory.

Santiago del Estero-based tanner Naturaleza Argentina has made space at its production facility for Luxury Leather Straps, a company set up by South W Group, which has links to global watch brands including Swatch, Tissot, Calvin Klein, Rado, Tommy, Lacoste and Hugo Boss.

In its first year of operation, Luxury Leather Straps aims to produce 100,000 leather watch-straps. It has created an initial 20 jobs but has said it plans to expand further in the years ahead and, in time, to move from the tannery to its own facilities.

Around half of the company’s watch-straps will go to customers outside Argentina, bringing in export earnings of around $700,000.
