If more bovine goes into cars, more skins can go into shoes

Founder of consultancy DLP Advisors and leatherbiz columnist David Peters said at a recent industry event in Bordeaux that the automotive industry is going to claim a greater and greater share of the bovine hide market, with as much as a 25% share of the world’s annual total of around 275 million hides going into that market by 2020.

This will leave less bovine leather for footwear, but Mr Peters pointed out that this does not necessarily mean that synthetic materials will be the only option left open to footwear producers. “Leather from goat, pig and sheep can also make good options for alternative substrates,” he said.

In response, one footwear industry expert told leatherbiz that goat can work well, particularly in women’s shoes, for which glazed kid has been used frequently. But he said materials such as these would be a little thin for men’s shoes and suggest linings may be required, adding cost and labour.
