Leather entrepreneur will keep workers’ home-ownership plan going
Colombian leathergoods entrepreneur Mario Hernández has said he remains committed to helping all of his company’s employees own their own homes.

Mr Hernández has a programme in place to help employees buy their own homes after they have completed five years’ service with his company. Speaking on a radio programme in Colombia on March 15, he said this will continue.

“One of my dreams is that all of the people who work for me should have a home of their own,” he said. “I know what it’s like for a whole family to have to live in one room. I love seeing people’s reaction when they move into their own home, with their own kitchen and their own bathroom. I love the reaction of their children and of the older family members who live with them.”

Mario Hernández, who has a chain of around 60 stores selling his bags, leather apparel and shoes, described himself as “a demanding employer who wants to have clear rules for everything”, said he simply wants to help the people who work for him to have a better quality of life.

At the moment he employs around 500 people, more than 300 of them in his own manufacturing plant in Bogotá.
