Report predicts 12% growth in China beef imports in 2015

Demand is strong among Chinese consumers and, according to BMI, the shortage of domestic supply of beef is “structural” and domestic producers will remain unable to supply the volume of beef China needs until at least 2018.
At present, only six countries are permitted to export beef to China with varied levels of access: Australia, Uruguay, New Zealand, Argentina, Canada and Costa Rica. Australia was the largest official external supplier to China in 2014, with 45% market share, ahead of Uruguay, which had a 30% share, and New Zealand with 14%. The other three countries shipping beef to China at the moment are Argentina, Costa Rica and Canada.
Three of these six countries, Australia, New Zealand and Costa Rica, have free trade agreements in place with China.
In February 2015, the Irish government announced that it had won approval to start shipping beef to China too.
