Vallero predicts greater prominence for plastic drums

Twelve years after it started making tanning drums in plastic, a large majority of the drums that Vallero International has working in tanneries around the world are still made of wood. However, the Turin-based company’s sales manager, Doriano Paglia, has said he believes plastic drums will claim a larger share of the market in future.

Speaking to leatherbiz at the 2015 Tanning Tech exhibition in Milan, Mr Paglia said that, of 350 drums equipped with Valero’s Vortex technology that are in operation around the world at the moment, 70% are made of wood.

“Wooden drums are still in fashion,” he said. “Wood is a wonderful material, but we have to think about the future too. Plastic drums will become increasingly prominent, even in tanning and liming. The way products are being made now can create a high level of oxidation, which can have a corrosive effect on wooden drums. Plastic drums are not affected in the same way.”
