The head of local government in the Nontron district of the Dordogne, Hervé Bournoville, included specialist vegetable-tanned leather producer Chamont in a recent tour of manufacturing companies in and around the town of Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière.
Chief executive, Mario da Rocha, told Mr Bournoville that the tannery is currently processing between 400 and 600 hides per week, using quebracho as the main tanning agent. Mr da Rocha said Chamont was sourcing most of hides from Ireland and from Germany at the moment.
He went on to explain that Chamont’s main customer is CWD, a local firm that specialises in making high-end saddles for horse-riding for customers all over the world.
