Growth figures for Colombian leather sector “deceptive”

Leather was one of the best performing industries in Colombia in 2014, new figures from the national statistics authority, DANE, have shown.

As part of a picture showing low growth overall, just 1.3%, DANE said leather had been one of Colombia’s four biggest success stories in 2014, along with automotive, domestic appliances and radio, television and communications equipment, each of which achieved double-digit growth compared to the year before.

The leather industry recorded growth of 17.3% in production volume and of 17.9% in revenues, DANE said.

Luis Gustavo Flórez, president of industry association Acicam, welcomed the figures but said they were “a little deceptive” because they included substantial export sales of raw hides to which his member companies had had no opportunity to add value.
