A local politician in the Bolivian department of Oruro, Carlos Soto, has said promotion of llama, alpaca and sheep herds and of leather from these animals form an important part of his plans for the region.

Speaking to local media as part of an election campaign, Mr Soto said his ideas for Oruro go even further and include setting up finished product factories to make use of finished leather from the animals that local farmers raise.

“We can use our leather to make golf gloves from llama and sheepskin,” he said, “as well as gloves for boxing and motorcycling and for apparel from llama and alpaca. We already have in place an abattoir in the town of Corque and a facility for treating the skins and we need to make the most of them.”
