Coming sets an example in water-saving
11/02/2015
Rain began falling in Goiás in recent days but the whole state has been suffering the effects of drought and the situation regarding water supply is reported to be “critical”.
Pedro Alves de Oliveira, president of the Goiás industry federation said in comments to local media that the leather sector is one of the worst affected, along with agriculture and food production. However, he highlighted the success of Coming as an example that other companies could try to emulate.
Around five years ago, the company has calculated it was using around 1,000 litres to process one hide, from raw to finished leather. It has managed to reduce this total by around 75%. In addition, Coming director Emillio Carlos Bittar has said further adjustments the company has made to its processes in response to the drought situation mean it is now be able to reuse 95% of its water.
