Cuba could open up for Nicaragua too

Companies in Nicaragua, including manufacturers of shoes and leathergoods, have said they have high hopes for a growth in trade with Cuba following the start of better relations between the Caribbean country and the US.

Nicaraguan business figures believe an improvement in relations between the US and Cuba could help open up the Cuban market for them too. Zacarías Mondragón, who was part of a delegation of companies from Nicaragua that visited Cuba recently, has told local media that the island nation represented “an entirely new market” for Nicaragua.

“We liked everything about Cuba,” he said, “except for one thing, the system of payment. Cuban companies use a letter-of-credit system, but it would mean waiting six months to get paid. Businesses need cash.”
