Double-face raw material is cheap but Turkish tanners can’t cash in

28/01/2015
Turkey’s double-face tanners have complained that stark reductions in the price of their raw materials have failed to lead to increases in production for them.

In the 18 months since July 2013, Turkish tanners say the price of raw merino lamb from Spain has fallen in price from between €18 and €22 per piece to only €6-€10 per piece. Nevertheless, tanners have not been able to take advantage of the situation to produce and sell more leather for the simple reason that they cannot find buyers of the finished leather. They have said the ongoing economic crisis in Russia is the main reason.
